Reentry

Undergraduate reentry is required when a student has not been enrolled for the previous two academic terms (excluding summer sessions) and/or the previous record has been discontinued.

Undergraduate Students may submit the Reentry application through the Office of Admissions MyAccount.

  • Note: Your first action within the Reentry application will be to create or reactivate your ISU net-ID. This net-ID will then serve as your primary communication channel (YourNet-ID@iastate.edu). Once created, please monitor this email account for further instructions and any additional requirements.
  • The reentry application should be submitted well in advance of the opening of the term for which reentry is desired.
  • Students who have completed an undergraduate degree, and wish to return to undergraduate studies, may apply for reentry into a different program of study. Students may not reenter into the same program of study from which they have previously earned a degree.

Reentry application requirements

Generally, a request to reenter Iowa State will be approved. However, the reentry application will be reviewed by the college to which a student plans to return if the student:

  • desires to change curriculum (College of Design or Nursing (BSN));
  • has previously earned an undergraduate degree;
  • has a previous Iowa State University cumulative grade point average below 2.00;
  • was dropped from the university for unsatisfactory academic progress or was not otherwise in good standing; or
  • since leaving Iowa State, has completed additional college study with less than a 2.00 grade point average.

The Office of Admissions will review any coursework you have taken at another institution and determine whether an updated official transcript is required. You will be notified if you need to request an official transcript be sent to Iowa State. The Office of Admissions will complete a transfer credit evaluation. For questions concerning transfer credits, contact the Office of Admissions.

International Undergraduate Students

In addition to the Reentry Application, International Undergraduate Students must also complete the Returning to ISU electronic form for the International Students and Scholars Office in order to receive their new I-20 or DS- 2019. The form can be found under the F-1 or J-1 Student Services tab in CyStart. If you have questions or concerns in regards to your documents, please contact the International Students and Scholars Office at 515-294-1120 or isso@iastate.edu. (U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents do not need to complete the CyStart application.)

The university requires nonimmigrant international undergraduates to complete CyStart after an absence of one semester or more (not including summers).

Academic or disciplinary reinstatement

Students who have been dropped from enrollment at Iowa State for unsatisfactory academic progress or were not otherwise in good standing, must also be approved for Reinstatement after Academic Dismissal by the Academic Standards Committee of the college into which they wish to return.

Students who have been dropped from enrollment at Iowa State for disciplinary reasons must contact the Dean of Students Office at 515 294-1020.

Exceptions to the Reentry Application

  • Students with a bachelor’s degree who wish to take supporting graduate-level coursework prior to applying for graduate degree admission should not complete this reentry application, but should request an application for non-degree graduate admission.
  • Students who have previously attended Iowa State only as non-degree students and who now seek to earn an undergraduate degree should apply for degree-seeking undergraduate admission.

Please see the Return / Reentry policy in the current catalog for more details.
